Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation Information

Breast augmentation is an surgical procedure that enhances the native breast volume, by placing an implant device underneath the breast tissues.  Breast implant surgery is commonly performed as a stand alone procedure. It can also be combined with other body contouring procedures as part of a Mommy Makeover.  Dr. Brenner tailors the procedure to meet each patients specific desires.

Many variables exist when it comes to breast augmentation surgery. During your office visit, Dr. Brenner will conform the specifics of the operation to your specific needs, with specific attention to location and placement of the planned incision,  final location of the implant device, type, size  and shape of implant, breast tissue characteristics, and patient wishes. Every patient is different; so too is every breast surgery.

Breast Implant Options:

Options for breast implants now include saline and silicone breast implant devices.  Dr. Brenner is also one of a select few plastic surgeon investigators in an FDA trial for Ideal Implant, a “hybrid” baffled saline implant designed to look and feel like a silicone implant. During your consultation, you will be able to compare and contrast all three types of implants.

Surgical Options:

Surgery Location: Outpatient surgery center.

Incision Placement: 1) Around the Nipple-Areolar Complex (peri-areolar) 2) Under each breast in the fold (inframammary)

Implant Pocket Location: 1) Below the muscle (sub-muscular/preferred) 2) Below the breast gland (sub-glandular) 3) Dual Plane

Implant Types: 1) Silicone (cohesive gel) 2) Saline 3) Hybrid (Ideal Implant)

Implant Profiles: 1) Moderate Profile 2) Moderate Plus Profile 3) High Profile 4) Ultra-High Profile (Reconstruction only)

Implant Style: 1) Round, Smooth Surface (preferred) 2) Round, Textured Surface 3) Shaped/Anatomic, Textured Surface

Surgery Details:

After making the incision, Dr. Brenner carefully creates a pocket for the the breast implant device. This is usually located behind the underlying chest wall muscle. The implant is placed into the pocket using a special funnel that helps to reduce friction on the implant shell, and also helps to reduce the risk of implant contact with the surrounding skin. This reduces the risk of implant contamination. Once the best implant is placed, a few stitches close the breast tissue and the incision. The whole procedure takes about an hour. Afterward, a soft padded chest wrap will be applied. This is worn overnight, and switched out the next day to a surgical bra at the first follow up office visit.

Breast Augmentation Recovery:

1) PAIN MEDS: Oral pain meds will help reduce any discomfort that you may experience, which should subside in a day or two.

2) VALIUM: If Dr. Brenner places your implants below the chest muscle, he will also prescribe a muscle relaxant (Valium) to help relieve any muscle spasm which can commonly occur.

3) ANTIBIOTICS: Antibiotics should be taken by mouth for 5-7 days after surgery.

3) SWELLING & BRUISING: Some swelling and/or bruising is expected. Both of these should resolve within a week. Consuming Arnica Montana and Bromelene pills often speeds up their resolution.

4) ACTIVITY: Dr. Brenner’s patients are up and moving within an hour after the operation. The only limitations in activity are to minimize heavy lifting and upper body activity. A good rule of thumb is to not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. Exercise regimens are restricted for 4-6 weeks to allow the implant pocket to heal appropriately.

5) CHEST WRAP: Your chest wrap will be removed the day after surgery, and Dr. Brenner will start you in a snug-fitting surgical or sports bra. Dr. Brenner recommends that you purchase several sizes of sports bras prior to surgery so that you will have a nice selection of comfortable bras during your recovery.

6) SUTURES: The sutures will be taken out within a week.

7) SCARS: Scars are an inevitable aspect of any surgery, but they will be small and inconspicuous, and they will gradually fade to become barely noticeable. Dr. Brenner will either recommend a topical scar gel (Biocorneum) or silicone gel strips to be placed on the incisions, starting two weeks after surgery…or once all incisions are fairly healed..
