In Los Angeles, Breast Augmentation Predicts the Economy?

Plastic Surgery is on the rise with the stock market

Every year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases the most recent plastic surgery statistics. And in 2010, the statistics show that plastic surgery bounced back, big time.  Now people are asking, could the trend in breast implant surgery forecast the larger economic trends in the stock market and US economy? According to ASPS, in 2010 13.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States, up 5 percent from the previous year. Some economic analysts are now looking to plastic surgery trends to help serve as an indicator of the health of the overall economy.

In a 2009 paper, a plastic surgery group from the  Cleveland Clinic published a journal article (Cosmetic Surgery Volume and Its Correlation With the Major US Stock Market Indices) that studied the volume of four cosmetic surgery procedures (forehead lift, face lift, breast augmentation and liposuction). The study noted that lifts, liposuction and breast augmentation all “demonstrate a direct (positive) statistical correlation to all three stock market indices-NASDAQ, S&P 500, Dow-Jones”. However, in 2010 it seems that non-invasive procedures (such as Botox), correlated most closely with the  large US stock indexes:

  • Botox:  +12%
  • DJIA:  +11%
  • S&P 500: 13%

2010 top five surgical procedures:

  1. Breast augmentation (296,000)
  2. Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) (252,000)
  3. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)  (209,000)
  4. Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) (203,000)
  5. Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) (116,000)

2010 top five minimally-invasive procedures:

  1. Botulinum toxin type A (5.4 million)
  2. Soft tissue fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse) (1.8 million)
  3. Chemical peel (1.1 million)
  4. Laser hair removal (938,000)
  5. Microdermabrasion (825,000)
